Server virtualization, automation and software provider, Parallels, has released its Panel 10 SMB Edition, which, along with and Parallels Partner Marketplace, is designed to enable hosters to quickly and easily deliver commercial SaaS offerings in the cloud.

Renton, Washington – (The Hosting News) – August 20, 2009 – Server virtualization, automation and software provider, Parallels, has released its Panel 10 SMB Edition, which, along with and Parallels Partner Marketplace, is designed to enable hosters to quickly and easily deliver commercial SaaS offerings in the cloud.

Jack Zubarev, President of Service Provider Division at Parallels noted, ”Parallels has been working on a number of best-of-breed ISVs over recent years to launch these offerings. We’re bringing ISVs and hosters together and helping both become more profitable.”

The comprehensive solution introduces Parallels Partner Marketplace, which enables hosters to rapidly enter the growing software-as-a-service market and provides SMBs access to a number of IT and business applications, such as e-commerce, customer relationship management, human resources, accounting, video conferencing, web content management, e-mail and more.

Parallels Partner Marketplace is a central feature of Parallels Panel 10 SMB Edition control panel and lets hosters rapidly profit from the growing Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) market by offering the most popular applications through the control panel, says the company. It further avers saying that Parallels Panel delivers access to best of breed software and services, such as Interspire’s e-mail marketing and Pinnacle Cart’s e-Commerce shopping cart. Provider Partners can easily and quickly offer SaaS offerings with no development effort of their own through the combination of the new Parallels Panel 10 SMB Edition and a co-branded Parallels Partner Marketplace storefront that Parallels provides. Server virtualization, automation and software provider, Parallels, will conduct a seven-country partner roadshow targeting Parallels’ partners and other hosters, cloud services providers and ISVs.

Munich, Germany – (The Hosting News) – August 25, 2009 – Server virtualization, automation and software provider, Parallels, will conduct a seven-country partner roadshow targeting Parallels’ partners and other hosters, cloud services providers and ISVs.

The EMEA Partner Roadshow will provide attendees with insights and best practices to deploy applications and services in a hosted environment. The roadshow will also provide practical examples of how hosters can use white-label reselling to create a lucrative indirect sales channel with a wider portfolio of applications, while maintaining brand independence and client loyalty.

Johan Vansimpsen, CTO and co-founder at Network Group Europe remarked, ”Network Group is using Parallels to balance a fine-tuned approach for delivering IT resellers the best possible technology to ‘grow with the cloud’ from the start. We are committed to delivering a full-blown hosted communications platform reseller solution and with Parallels, we are now able to deploy new services five times faster, so logically we are anticipating five times more revenue. Parallels also allows Network Group systems integrators (SIs) and value added resellers (VARs) a speedy entry to market option that gives them the fastest route to customers who trust them to deliver the most flexible software and services packages at the best price points.”

White-label reselling enables hosters to resell and deliver SaaS applications including Microsoft Exchange, Windows SharePoint, Microsoft Office Communications Server (OCS), etc. in a hosted environment. In the SaaS model, end user customers subscribe to applications instead of purchasing them, typically on a monthly basis. In this pay-as-you go approach, SMBs are afforded an easy-to-use low-cost service.

An April 2009, study by IDC finds that growth in the SaaS market will be strong in Europe despite – and in some cases because of – the weak economic conditions. The overall SaaS market will grow from 237 million in 2004 to 6,005 million in 2013 (1). From this and other recent IDC studies, it is clear that SaaS has become accepted by the mainstream of user organizations around Europe. This will result in continued strong growth, making SaaS a rising star in a very largely depressed European software market.

Dan Germain, CTO at Cobweb Solutions remarked, ”Leveraging Parallels we were able to increase our average revenue per user, deploy new services faster and reduce operating costs. It was critical for us to find a provider able to properly support white-label services at a modular and infrastructure level, so that our partners can resell Cobweb services under their own brand. Parallels allows Cobweb and its resellers to provide multiple-vendor solutions and flexible billing and administration across its different service offerings. Parallels enables Cobweb to increase revenue from each and every customer, both now and in the future.”

White-Label Reselling lets hosters delegate service plans to their customers to resell and offer a wider array of applications, without the extended cost of infrastructure involved in creating and distributing the applications themselves. White-label resale also offers an indirect sales channel and lets resellers maintain their unique brand independence, as well as retaining client loyalty. With white-label web hosting, it is possible for anyone to run their own web hosting business, while they rent or buy the actual web server space and services from an established hosting provider. Resellers do not have to take on the huge investment that make-up a web hosting service such as web servers, network connections, data center staff, server administrators, server support technicians and web server software and system licenses.

The 2009 Parallels Partner Roadshow will be take place in: Stockholm, September 1; Amsterdam, September 3; Warsaw, September 7; Cologne, September 10; Paris, September 14; Madrid, September 17 and London, September 21. New Video on WHIR tv- Interview with Chris Sheridan, VP of Sales at eNom
By Larissa Primeau As promised, today’s video features Chris Sheridan, VP sales at eNom. Sheridan enthusiastically goes into great detail about eNom’s recent announcements, specifically their launching of rich content. With such, they hope to deliver more services to resellers, but I’ll let Chris go into more detail about that. ENom is focused on being faster, something that seems to be paying dividends. ENom was acquired by Demand Media, a company focused on quality of content. They’re now bringing that model into their business and pushing it down to their reseller channels. Sheridan has big plans for the company and is confident in their long-term success. Having spoken to Sheridan, I can honestly say that eNom appears to be an exciting company with a promising future. His enthusiasm is infectious and I look forward to hearing more from eNom in the future. Thanks for watching the video and stay tuned next week for more footage from HostingCon 2009.

New Video on WHIR tv- Interview with Michael Blend, CEO of eNom/EVP of Demand Media
By Larissa Primeau Today’s video features CEO of eNom, Michael Blend a.k.a Blender. Blend actually wears a few different hats, aside from being CEO of eNom he’s also EVP of Demand Media. He’s a busy guy to say the least. I had a chance to speak with Blend at the eNom booth at HostingCon 2009 and we briefly touched on various subjects. To give you a bit of a background, Demand Media purchased eNom and Blend goes on to explain why eNom is vital to the Demand Media purpose. Speaking of purpose, you should hear the staggering facts and figures he shares regarding Demand Media’s circulation and revenue. They call themselves the “Leaders in Social Media” and by making 3 billion conversations a month possible, this seems like a proclamation they can confidently claim.

New Video on WHIR tv- Interview with Emil Sayegh of Rackspace.
By Larissa Primeau Today’s video is a continuation of our HostingCon 2009 interview series. I had a chance to catch up with Emil Sayegh, GM of Cloud Computing at Rackspace and we discussed what role shared hosters will play in this ever expanding cloud computing landscape. If you are a shared hoster, Sayegh dispenses some invaluable advice.

Disaster Recovery In The Cloud
By Justin Giardina One thing I’ve noticed when working with clients is that they are adopting virtualization within their IT environments more and more – seems to me it’s a dynamic that is happening this year more than ever, even though virtualization has been around for a long time. This increased rate of adoption could be due to the slowdown in the economy, since virtualization definitely streamlines IT environments and provides a lot of other cost saving benefits (you’ve heard it before). I do think that nowadays there is more awareness and education out there. The increase in overall technical media focus is probably helping businesses achieve a better comfort level with the technology and more willingness to embrace the virtues of virtualization than in years past, whether they are going completely virtual or with a hybrid combination. But even with this increased virtualization adoption rate, I am still finding not as many businesses are truly embracing the full benefits of virtualization specifically related to disaster recovery. They “contain and consolidate” their server environment by moving their apps and operating systems to virtual machines, but are still missing out on some of the huge DR advantages. Let’s face it – virtualization coupled with some of the newer replication technologies can yield extremely cost effective disaster recovery options that once were only available to large enterprise companies. For those of you implementing virtualization within your organization, make sure you look into the myriad of disaster recovery options and benefits. With a little bit of guidance and support, your organization can have a robust back up plan for a fraction of the cost.

ICANN Brings Policy Discussion to the Great White North
By Adam Eisner Every year, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which is responsible for the management of the Internet’s Domain Name System, holds three international meetings around various parts of the world. What many people don’t know, however, is that ICANN also holds regional gatherings specifically for registrars in particular geographic areas. This affords registrars who otherwise may not be able to attend a meeting the opportunity to get a glimpse into the ICANN world and participate in the policy process. I was therefore very excited to hear ICANN had chosen Toronto, Canada (where Tucows, the WHIR and many hosting companies are headquartered) as the site for their 2009 North American registrar regional gathering, which took place last week. The gathering provided a great opportunity to meet a wide range of ICANN-accredited registrars I otherwise wouldn’t get to see at an ICANN meeting, including several web hosting companies.

E-Commerce Hosting and Client Management
By Rick Wilson There’s a dillema in the world of E-Commerce hosting and that’s how to deal with the clients. On the one hand an ecommerce hosting customer who actually is selling goods via his website probably has an ARPU of roughly $1,000 a year and will stay with your company 5 years or longer. Creating a client who’s worth $5,000 to a webhost over his life versus $150 or so for the life of a “traditional” web host client are like mana from heavan for a webhost (if you can get them).

ElasticHosts Web Hosting Offers Flexible, Scalable Cloud Hosting
UK based cloud provider, ElasticHosts, has launched its cloud server solutions, which are designed to provide ultra-flexible and easy-to-use server capacity for scalable web hosting and on-demand burst computing.
London, United Kingdom – (The Hosting News) – August 19, 2009 – UK based cloud provider, ElasticHosts, has launched its cloud server solutions, which are designed to provide ultra-flexible and easy-to-use server capacity for scalable web hosting and on-demand burst computing.

Richard Davies, CEO of ElasticHosts offered, ”To date, businesses looking for the cost savings and scalability of cloud hosting have had to tackle complex user interfaces and have been limited to a handful of server sizes offered by different vendors. We have designed ElasticHosts so that it can be used by almost anyone and it allows users to configure their servers specifically to suit their requirements.”

Customers benefit from a user-friendly interface that can be managed from any desktop and allows them to create virtual servers instantly and resize their capacity immediately. ElasticHosts’ cloud servers allow customers the cost-efficiency of buying exactly the capacity they need today, with the peace of mind that they can immediately scale up. Capacity is billed on-demand by the hour, unlike traditional hosting contracts which tie customers to fixed capacity for up to two years. The servers run any PC operating system, are fully configurable and designed to accommodate all forms of web hosting. ElasticHosts offers a 100% SLA with 100x credits for downtime, and is the only Infrastructure-as-a-Service provider to offer two independent data centres in Europe, using PEER 1′s high performance 10 Gbps SuperNetwork infrastructure to support mission critical hosting needs where business continuity is vital.

Andrew Fear of Trana eCommerce Ltd, an ElasticHosts customer noted, ”I have used many other cloud and virtual server solutions in the past. I was beginning to get frustrated with these providers and had been looking for alternatives for a while. Then I found ElasticHosts and I realized that I would be able to add a lot of flexibility for no extra cost. I now have quite a few servers with ElasticHosts. We can buy exactly the capacity that we need today and then scale it when we need more, which is a huge benefit and saves a lot of money. The best thing about ElasticHosts for me though, is being able to talk technical to someone who can talk technical back – a rare thing these days.” To mark its launch, ElasticHosts is offering a free four-day trial to allow businesses to experience the power and simplicity of cloud hosting for themselves. ElasticHosts provides ultra-flexible and easy-to-use server capacity for scalable web hosting and on-demand burst computing such as batch processing, development and test, backup and disaster recovery and cloud bursting. ElasticHosts offers competitive pricing for both subscription and burst use, outstanding performance for any PC operating system, fully flexible sizing, two independent UK data centres with fast direct links to the UK/EU internet, and a 100% SLA with 100x credits for downtime.

The list represents the most comprehensive look at the most important segment of the economy – America’s independent-minded entrepreneurs. Consumer electronics maker Vizio, Internet giant GoDaddy, rental car service Zipcar, and beverage maker Honest Tea are among the prominent brands featured on this year’s list.

Jim Melloan, project manager of the Inc. 5000 remarked, ”Savvy trend spotters and those who invest in private companies know that the Inc. 5000 is the best place to find out about young companies that are achieving success through a wide variety of unprecedented business models, as well as older private companies that are still expanding at an impressive rate. That’s why our list is so eagerly anticipated every year.”

Layered Tech, a global provider of managed dedicated hosting, on-demand virtualization/cloud computing and Web services, ranked in the top 12 percent of Inc.’s list because of its three-year growth rate of 441 percent. The Plano, Texas-based company invests heavily in R and D to add new technologies and services to remain a top 10 hosting provider globally. Layered Tech evolved from an emerging dedicated hosting company to a recognized Web hosting provider whose scalable infrastructure powers millions of sites and a wide array of Internet-enabled applications.

The 2009 Inc. 5000, unveiled today on Inc.com, serves as a unique report card on the U.S. economy. Despite the ongoing recession, aggregate revenue among the companies on the list actually increased to $214 billion, up $29 billion from last year, with a median three-year growth rate of 126 percent. The Inc. 5000 are responsible for creating more than 1 million jobs since their founding, making the list perhaps the best example of the impact private, fast-growing companies can have on the economy. Complete results of the Inc. 5000, including company profiles and an interactive database that can be sorted by industry, region, and other criteria, can be found on Inc.com.

This year’s list also offers a preview of which industries are poised for growth in coming years. With an average growth rate of 667 percent, Insurance ranked as the top industry overall. Government Services was the top industry gainer with 252 companies on this year’s list, up from 135 last year. Health is the top industry by both total revenue ($22.7 billion) and total employment (156,223 jobs).

Once again, California tops the Inc. 5000 with the most companies of any state with 612. The Golden State is followed by Texas (393), New York (316), Florida (263), and Virginia (261). All 50 states, plus Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico, are represented on this year’s list.

New York boasts 371 Inc. 5000 companies, making it the top metropolitan area, followed by Washington, D.C. (317), Los Angeles (253), Atlanta (209), and Chicago (203).

Bolstered by this year’s No. 1 company, Northern Capital Insurance, Insurance emerged as the top industry, with an average growth rate of 667 percent. Other strong performers include Energy (523 percent) and Government Services (491 percent).

In total, the companies on the Inc. 5000 have created more than 1 million jobs. Health is the top employer with 156,223 jobs, followed by Business Products and Services (122,911), IT Services (89,632), Food and Beverage (86,572), and Construction (65,494).

IT Services had the most companies on this year’s list with 658, followed by Business Products and Services (502), Advertising and Marketing (398), Construction (354), and Manufacturing (342).

Topping this year’s list is Northern Capital Insurance, a Miami-based firm that is helping to revolutionize Florida’s ailing insurance industry. The company generated $95 million in revenue in 2008 and an impressive three-year growth rate of 19,812 percent.

The top woman-owned company is P3S (No. 17 overall), a San Antonio – based firm that provides IT network security and physical security services, mostly to the Defense Department. P3S, owned by Mary Ellen Trevino, recorded revenue of $13.5 million in 2008 and a three-year growth rate of 5,898 percent. The top minority-owned company is Harley Stanfield (No. 3 overall), a Washington, D.C. – based real estate investment firm that buys existing properties, makes them energy efficient, and then resells them as investment properties. Harley Stanfield, founded by Cedric Franklin, posted revenue of $38.4 million in 2008 and a three-year growth rate of 13,350 percent.

The Inc. 5000 posted an aggregate revenue of $214 billion in 2008, up nearly 16 percent from the previous year. The top five industries by total revenue include Health ($22.7 billion), Business Products and Services ($19.6 billion), Construction ($18.8 billion), Energy ($14.7 billion), and IT Services ($13.2 billion).

The Inc. 5000 is ranked according to percentage revenue growth from 2005 through 2008. To qualify, companies must have been founded and generating revenue by the first week of 2005, and therefore able to show four full calendar years of sales. Additionally, they have to be U.S.-based, privately held, for profit, and independent — not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies — as of December 31, 2008. Revenue in 2005 must have been at least $200,000, and revenue in 2008 must have been at least $2 million. The top 10 percent of companies on the list comprise the Inc. 500, now in its 28th year.

New Video on WHIR tv- Interview with Terrence Bush of Layered Tech
By Larissa Primeau HostingCon 2009 was a great success and I’m happy to report that WHIRtv was able to talk to a lot of exhibitors and attendees. Over the course of the next couple of weeks I’ll be posting interviews with various companies from around the globe. I’ll as well be putting together a video highlighting some of the after hours events and a short video where interviewees shared with me what they would be doing if the Internet didn’t exist. Some of the answers might surprise you. The first video to kick off our HostingCon ’09 series features Terrence Bush, COO at Layered Tech. RedesignSerious remodeling has been underway at DomainTools.

Here at DomainTools we are in the midst of a major site redesign project and we wanted to share the beginnings of the new and improved “DomainTools” site with you starting today.
The first item most readers of this blog will notice is the new login screen. This necessary, but usually blase page, received a serious renovation, with a lot of thought on the small details that help you quickly find your way past the login and on to the parts of the site you care most about – the product and services and your account.

New users will also find a greatly-improved process of setting up a new account. Visitors will find improved explanations of membership levels, inline product descriptions, and a clear, discrete flow from decision to sign-up.

OldMemPgThe biggest change is our member’s new home page. The old home page was certainly colorful, but it wasn’t all that helpful except to exercise your scroll-wheel finger. Rather than display the majority oAcctSrvf account details on a single page, the new member account page is tabular and organized by related items carefully constructed to keep things on one page for most resolutions. Simply tab to the section you’re interested in to drill down to further details, make changes to your account, and review historical information. You’ll also find a new section under the “Messages” tab that will let us send important information and updates to our customers directly. A red flag will indicate when a new message is available to review. Watch for updates to DomainTools in this section!

We realized early in the design phase of this remodel that two items were critically important: improve performance AND user-experience for our customers. A few of the performance improvements implemented were detailed in an earlier post and we continue our efforts in that area as well. When delving into the user-experience modifications, we identified a need to provide customers easy access to information. There now exists a dedicated panel always visible in the My Account section with a simple, clear list and direct path to services used and reports ordered.

Stay tuned for more upgrades that will bring our customers systems that are easier to use, exciting new products and services and lots of performance enhancements.

Web Hosting and Data Center Customers, Offered SoftLayer, VeriSign SSL

Mountain View, California – (The Hosting News) – August 18, 2009 – SoftLayer Technologies, Inc., provider of global, on-demand data center and hosting services, and VeriSign, Inc., provider of Internet infrastructure services for the networked world, have formed a partnership to bring the entire line of VeriSign Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Certificates to SoftLayer customers.

Tim Callan, vice president of product marketing at VeriSign noted, ”Businesses of every size need a fully automated SSL solution that delivers complete access, control, security and scalability. This partnership with SoftLayer enables thousands of businesses to manage a range of SSL protections within the management console they use every day. We’re proud to partner with SoftLayer, and we look forward to delivering world-class security solutions to SoftLayer customers for years to come.”

In expanding its security offerings, SoftLayer will also carry Extended Validation (EV) SSL solutions and SSL Certificates from GeoTrust, another VeriSign brand. The alliance enables SoftLayer to deliver VeriSign and GeoTrust SSL protection to customers of all sizes. To simplify SSL deployment and management for its customers, SoftLayer will integrate SSL security into its innovative management console.

VeriSign EV SSL Certificates offer a proven safeguard against phishing scams that lure unsuspecting consumers to sites that can appear almost identical to genuine Web pages. Identity thieves use these fraudulent pages to capture credit card numbers, passwords and other valuable personal information. When visiting sites protected by VeriSign EV SSL, Internet users using high security browsers see a green address bar. The green bar tells consumers they have reached a web site whose authenticity has been certified by VeriSign. An EV SSL Certificate triggers visual cues beyond the green address bar, including a new field that contains the name of the organization that owns the site and in some cases the name of the security provider that issued the certificate.

George Karidis, chief strategy officer at SoftLayer remarked, ”Everything SoftLayer does, from hosting to data storage to security, centers on connecting our customers with the best, most reliable technology, and that’s what VeriSign brings to our security portfolio. SSL security is critical to managed hosting and enterprise application hosting. With this range of SSL options – from VeriSign SSL and GeoTrust SSL up to state-of-the-art VeriSign EV SSL protection – our customers can protect themselves and everyone who visits their web sites or uses their hosted applications. And with VeriSign, that protection comes from the most trusted SSL authority on the web.”

As the most respected and trusted SSL authority on the web, VeriSign is the EV SSL Certificate provider of choice for more than 12,000 Internet domain names, representing 74 percent of the entire EV SSL Certificate market worldwide. In fact, over 95 percent of the Fortune 500 and 96 of the world’s 100 largest SSL-using banks secure their sites with SSL Certificates from VeriSign.

Headquartered in Plano, Texas, SoftLayer delivers world-class, on-demand virtual data center services on a global basis from facilities located in Dallas, Texas; Seattle, Wash.; and Washington, DC. SoftLayer integrates all facets of IT to innovate industry-leading solutions that are fully automated. This empowers customers with complete control, security, scalability, and ease-of-management for their IT environment.

VeriSign, Inc. is the trusted provider of Internet infrastructure services for the networked world. Billions of times each day, VeriSign helps companies and consumers all over the world engage in communications and commerce with confidence.

ElasticHosts Web Hosting Offers Flexible, Scalable Cloud Hosting

E-Commerce Hosting and Client Management

Posted by admin in Uncategorized on August 23rd, 2009 |  No Comments »

By Rick Wilson There’s a dillema in the world of E-Commerce hosting and that’s how to deal with the clients. On the one hand an ecommerce hosting customer who actually is selling goods via his website probably has an ARPU of roughly $1,000 a year and will stay with your company 5 years or longer. Creating a client who’s worth $5,000 to a webhost over his life versus $150 or so for the life of a “traditional” web host client are like mana from heavan for a webhost (if you can get them).

By Joshua Beil Parallels recently conducted a survey of its certified Partners and I wanted to share one of the most interesting findings. Of the 85 Hosters that participated in the study, 74% indicated they expect VPS hosting revenues to increase over the next 12 months with only 4% predicting a decrease. This compares 69% expecting an increase in Dedicated hosting with 13% expecting a decrease. For Shared hosting, 57% expect an increase and 12% expect a decrease. In short, VPS hosting is expected to be the primary revenue driver among traditional hosting plans over the next year.

Bush was a really interesting interview and explained how they recently expanded offerings on Astro and some other news that you’ll hear first on WHIR tv. Stay tuned for many more videos from HostingCon 2009. In the meantime, check our editorial coverage of the event here.

By Tom Millitzer And the Winner goes out to NCC, for the “Best Presentation Graphics At HostingCon 2009″ for “Dissecting a Web Host Company Acquisition” (download PowerPoint). I would like to thank the academy for this imaginary award. The trouble with slides and taking notes is that it leaves out those bulky words of the presenter as well as audience comments. Hopefully this blog (You have to download the PowerPoint to make any sense of this blog) will fill in various gaps, provide direction and most important the general observations and battle plans put forth by the audience which had great experience in the hosting acquisition game.

He attended HostingCon for the first time this year to meet with providers in the Web Hosting community that might be interested in Olark as a solution for their end customers.

Web Hosting Data Centers from Fortune, Participate in PG&E Energy Program

San Jose, California – (The Hosting News) – August 18, 2009 – Premium wholesale data center space for corporate customers provider, Fortune Data Centers, has instituted energy efficiency measures as part of the company’s participation in PG and E’s High Tech Energy Efficiency program.

John Sheputis, CEO of Fortune Data Centers noted, ”We are firmly committed to energy efficiency while minimizing our impact on the environment, which is exemplified in our San Jose facility. And, a big priority is reducing costs for our customers. Our data center is one of the most advanced, energy-efficient data centers in Silicon Valley and allows us to pass along significant cost savings to our customers.”

It is estimated that the new efficiency measures will save 10,448,592 Kilowatts per year – equivalent to powering 1,500 homes annually or the reduction of 4,200 tons of CO2, as calculated by PG and E.

PG and E’s High Tech Energy Efficiency program provides technical services and analysis of energy efficiency measures to companies like Fortune Data Centers. The California utility offers incentives for a broad portfolio of technologies, including virtualization/consolidation, massive array of idle disks (MAID) data storage systems, high efficiency power conditioning and delivery equipment, PC network management software, and strategies for lowering air conditioning energy use and costs.

An independent engineering firm analyzed the design documents for Fortune’s flagship data center project in San Jose, then provided Fortune and PG and E estimates of energy savings. Fortune Data Centers received an incentive award of over $900,000 from PG and E to partially offset the premium costs of the energy efficiency design improvements which Fortune implemented.

Fortune Data Centers reconstructed a former clean room facility and built it into a highly efficient data center with an exceptional Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) rating of 1.37 – far superior to the industry average PUE of 2.0, and better than the EPA’s 2011 target PUE of 1.45 for state-of-the-art enterprise-class data centers. To achieve such a rating, Fortune Data Centers invested in highly-efficient infrastructure components, selecting critical components such as Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPSs) based on their energy efficiency ratings.

Mechanical improvements included Fortune’s redesigning the cooling system to minimize the power required for air distribution. Rather than use a traditional raised floor, Fortune elected to supply cold air from an overhead plenum to take advantage of the natural density of cold air and the buoyancy of hot air. Other steps included changing the coils in the air handlers to improve energy efficiency.

Mark Bramfitt, principal program manager for high tech programs for PG and E added, ”PG and E commends Fortune Data Centers for renovating its existing facility into a world class energy-efficient data center. For more than 30 years, PG and E has worked with our customers to help them become more energy efficient and save money. We are proud to have provided technical assistance and financial incentives to support Fortune’s commitment to energy efficiency.”

Fortune Data Centers was founded to create a class of industrial grade data centers for corporate clients seeking a cost-effective alternative to the prospect of in-house development and facility management. Fortune’s San Jose facility is designed to provide best in class reliability and total value for large scale deployments of mission critical applications. The property meets or exceeds the toughest industry standards for data centers-in all operational categories of availability, security, connectivity, and physical resilience. Fortune is a privately held company, founded in 2006.
